Republican President Ronald Reagan served as Commander-in-chief from January 1981 to January of 1989, holding his position in office for two terms. When Reagan took his oath into office, he inherited prior damage from predecessor Jimmy Carter, including the issue of the Iranian Hostage Crisis as well as damage inflicted by the Vietnam War from years prior. Reagan’s start in politics was not the normal approach. Coming from a successful career as a popular Hollywood actor, Reagan acquired his interest in politics in a more unconventional way. As president of the Screen Actors Guild, Reagan became involved in disputes over the issue of Communism in the film industry. Under Reaganomics, 16 million new jobs were created. Not on ly did he cut tax rates, but the Tax Reform Act of 1986 simplified the income-tax code by eliminating many tax shelters, reducing the number of deductions and tax brackets. Reagan’s dream of tax returns fitting on a postcard has been nullified as Congress has regressed and continued to make the tax code more complex, necessitating a new push for reform. Reagan played a large part in restrengthening the weak, ineffectual, and vulnerable military which left behind after President Carters time in office. The Reagan administration funded research and development of weapons systems, including stealth technology and precision weaponry, later used in Persian Gulf wars. Reagan’s buildup was the largest peacetime defense enlargement in history, which included larger training ranges and military pay increases, helped invigorate the American military from its Vietnam War-era despondency. The Vietnam War had left severe damage on America’s military forces as well as the co untry as a whole, and even years later still had an impact on our military efforts.
